In the February 2003 issue of Popular Mechanics writer Kevin Berg predicted the demise of the 2-stroke snowmobile.  "...the same Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules that are forcing outboard motors, dirt bikes and ATVs to clean up their act by 2006 are forcing snowmobile manufacturers to switch to quieter, more economical, clean-burning 4-stroke engines."

The sweet, high pitched whine of four hundred CCs churning out nine thousand RPM of raw 2-stroke power may soon be a cherished memory.  Also gone will be the spatter of burnt oil on new-fallen snow, mixing oil with gasoline, plugged oil injectors and engines seized up due to poor lubrication.  In exchange the 4-stroke rider gets valves, push-rods, lifters, a timing mechanism, an oil pump and an oil pan.  

Part of the attraction of the 2-stroke power plant was its relative simplicity.  My riding buddies and I did most of our own maintenance. (A lot of it on the trail)  Maintenance consisted mostly of cleaning fouled plugs and tinkering with the carburetion.  The sophistication of today's powerful 4-stroke engines requires professional service, with tools and instruments especially designed for the job.  One of the most important tools in the professional's toolbox is the Engine Clean OIL TOOL.  

Recreational riders are particularly hard on their machines and the lubricants that keep them running.  Snowmobiles, ATVs and dirt bikes are subjected to sustained operation at high RPM under extreme conditions of heat and cold.  Operation in deep, wet snow or dry, dust filled air tests the design and the fitness of these vehicles.  In addition these machines are usually operated seasonally.  That means long periods of non-operation; plenty of time for already abused oil to turn to sludge.  That is why the Engine Clean OIL TOOL service should be part of the routine maintenance of these machines.

How it works.  During an oil service, the old oil filter is removed and the engine oil is drained.  The OIL TOOL is then connected to the oil filter housing with a spin on adapter.  Air is injected into the oil galleys and the old oil is flushed from the engine.  To prevent a dry start, a quart of new oil is poured into the OIL TOOL canister and it is air injected into the oil galleys.  A new filter is installed and the engine is filled to the proper level.  This service prevents oil carry over from contaminating the new oil even as it is being added.  Service with the OIL TOOL can improve performance, increase engine life and reduce negative impact on the environment. 

My friends and I rode not just for the thrill of high speed and challenging obstacles.  We also enjoyed the natural beauty of Utah's magnificent Cache valley and wanted to preserve that beauty for the enjoyment of our sons and daughters.  Modern technology is producing the products that will enable our children to leave a cleaner, more stable environment to their children without giving up the pleasures of snowmobiling, and other machine driven outdoor activities.
