Carbon, varnish and gums (sludge) build up in an engine when the oil isn’t changed. If you neglect your engine long enough, it will sludge up and fail.

"Oil sludge" has become a serious problem in recent years. More new car buyers are leasing vehicles and neglect oil changes.

Some motorists are uncertain as to how often the oil needs to be changed. Vehicle manufacturers have extended their recommended oil change intervals to reduce maintenance costs.

Even when the recommended service intervals are met, motorists have ended up with their crankcase full of sludge. Extended oil change intervals of 7,500 or 10,000 miles or more are based on ideal operating conditions—not the “severe conditions” which are actually typical driving conditions.

Some engines, such as diesels, suffer more blow-by than others and require more frequent oil and filter changes. The high temperatures in turbocharged gasoline engines can oxidize oil and diminish its lubricating properties.

When the oil remains in the crankcase too long, the additives that lubricate and protect the engine become depleted. Left unchanged, oil gets dirtier and dirtier as moisture, acids, soot and wear particles accumulate. Engine wear accelerates and the engine is headed for failure.
